Photovoltaics (PV) is based on physical processes which allow power generation from sunlight by means of solar cells. The conversion process depends on the photoeffect (release of positive and negative charge carriers within a solid state body). Semi-conductors are used for this process and become conductive when light/heat is fed into them. The semi-conductors that are used for this process are usually manufactured from silicium.
